Autumn ChillLooks like the chill mornings that herald Fall have finally settled in....and all creation is going nuts! The hummingbirds show themselves more readily now, trying to get their last fillings of nectar before they go who knows where. The squirrels can be seen in the forest, stashing acorns in a million places, half of which they'll forget come winter. The pets have wisely begun thickening their coats. Even the deer are venturing boldly into the yard, aware that the succulent greens of Summer will soon die.
And I'm thinking about the jars and jars of applesauce I'd love to put up, the water that needs to be drained from the pool, and the blankets that need to be aired of their dusty attic smell.
But surely a mother needs to be a little less short-sighted, and better prepared for the future - the future of her children! I'm speaking of course, of their eventual departure from this earth. What am I doing today to prepare for that season of their lives when Christ determines their stint here is over? Am I so worried about fall clothing that we forget to clothe ourselves in the gospel each day? Am I so determined to make them eat well, that we neglect the bread of heaven, available to us at daily Mass? Am I feeling so charged about having them write thankyou notes that we don't start each day thanking Our Heavenly Father for his goodness?
Our Lord said that the earthly seasons should be a reminder for us of heavenly realities.
How are you preparing for that season when the sap has run for the last season, and the heart is tested for it's fidelity?
Thy Kingdom Come!
